Great post Eric. Purposeful Networking, I think, is the key. While I don't use (or like to see) blatant plugs/ads in social networks, there are clear advantages to using them. We recently needed assistance with a project in an area well outside of areas of expertise. A Twitter post and one request for help via LinkedIn generated an overwhelming response (within 12 hours!) from people just willing to help. Ultimately, and without question, it did help us deliver better service to the client, and helped us secure the deal. Without the responses, we may have actually turned away business (shudder at the thought!).

I think organizations are doing themselves a disservice if not already leveraging the vast and ready-to-help networks available today.

While managing access and shoring up policies may lag behind for a time, from here, it looks like the pro's outweigh the con's.
